The term riangsheng 5 (original)referred to the act of imitating someone’s speech and actions.It 6 (rise)as a performing act during the Ming Dynasty.From the Qing Dynasty to the 1920s,riangsheng gradually developed to become a style of comedic monologue.7 (late),ziangsheng came to beperformed as a dialogue and sometimes even in groups of three or more.

The earliest riangsheng comedian known by name is Zhang Sanlu,8 performed in the mid-nineteenthcentury.
